How does one keep research groups integrated within an institute?

One of the major problems that an institute director faces is cajoling and nudging research groups to reach out beyond themselves–to continue to intellectually communicate with other research groups within the institute as a whole. In the next several blog entries I’m going to be writing about this problem from a number of viewpoints.
